Zakynthos Island, also known as Zante, is a stunning destination in Greece that attracts thousands of tourists every year. With its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and breathtaking natural landscapes, it’s no surprise that the island has become a popular spot for visitors from around the world.
One of the most famous attractions on the island is the shipwreck beach, named after a stranded ship that ran aground on the beach in 1980. However, due to recent safety concerns, the Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection Organisation (OASP) recommended the closure of the beach following a site visit on March 8, 2023.
Greece’s Tourism Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, said:
“The safety of residents and visitors is above everything else.”
and
“As the minister of tourism, I am the last person to want the beach to be closed, although boats will be able to approach and visitors can enjoy and photograph this unique attraction. However, it would be negligence if we ignored the recommendation of the experts and endangered the lives of residents and travelers who visit the Shipwreck. Above all, it is safety and human life,”
The Regulation says:
“The prohibition of traffic and the approach – anchoring of any floating motorized or non-motorized means, as well as the prohibition of taking a sea bath by bathers in the marine area inside the imaginary line which joins the two ends (north and south) of the “Navagio” Cove Zakynthos. The approach to the sea area in question is allowed only in cases of emergency and assistance”.
Although the decision to close the beach may be disappointing for some tourists, it is important to prioritize safety and preserve the island’s natural beauty. While the closure of the shipwreck beach may seem like a setback, there are still plenty of other attractions on the island that tourists can enjoy, we have made a list of them in another post about the hidden gems of Zakynthos Island.
The Blue Caves, located on the northern side of the island, are a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the island’s natural beauty. With their stunning blue waters and unique rock formations, the Blue Caves are sure to leave visitors in awe.
The Venetian Castle is another popular attraction on the island, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich history and culture. Located on a hill overlooking Zakynthos town, the castle provides stunning views of the island and its surroundings.
Preserving the raw beauty of Zakynthos Island is crucial for both the safety of tourists and the preservation of the island’s natural heritage. By implementing strict regulations and safety measures, such as limiting visitor numbers, installing barriers and warning signs, and providing adequate staff and emergency services, we can ensure that tourists can continue to enjoy the island’s beauty while staying safe.
In conclusion, although the closure of the shipwreck beach may be disappointing for some tourists, there are still plenty of other attractions on Zakynthos Island that are waiting to be explored. By prioritizing safety and preservation, we can ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of the island while also respecting and protecting its natural heritage.
